Dr. Xiaogang Wang lab in the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology at Virginia Tech is seeking a highly motivated graduate students to begin in the Spring of 2027 to pursue research in the field of microbial pathogenesis. Our lab focuses on the pathogenesis of Staphylococcus aureus and extracellular vesicles, an emerging field that have significant impact on bacterial physiology and pathogenesis. Our recent work has been published in journals like Nat Comm, PNAS, mBio, Trends in Micro.


We are looking for students who are self-motivated, passionate about microbiology, and eager to work in a collaborative team environment. Applicants should have a strong background in one or more of the following areas: microbial pathogenesis, immunology, or biochemistry. Candidates are also expected to demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.


Admission Requirements


To be considered for a PhD position in DBSP at Virginia Tech, you are expected to:

·hold a bachelors or a masters degree in microbiology or immunology, or from related fields.

·TOEFL score： 90 (IBT) 

·Optional GRE (Minimum Scores): 150 Verbal, 150 Quantitative

·GPA: Equivalent of a 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale)

·Academic and professional goals statement describing research experience and plans for research in your graduate studies.

·Three letters of recommendation, preferably from faculty members at colleges attended who are familiar with the applicant's academic and research capabilities.
